How efficient is a closed combustion fireplace compared to an open fire?
A closed combustion fireplace typically achieves 75–85% efficiency, compared with just 15–30% for a traditional open fireplace. The sealed firebox and controlled air intake burn wood far more completely, so most of the heat radiates into your room instead of escaping up the chimney. In practical terms, you get roughly three to five times more usable heat from the same amount of wood.
How much does a closed combustion fireplace cost in South Africa?
Quality closed combustion fireplaces in South Africa range from about R15,995 for compact cast-iron models to R78,990 for large premium designer units, including VAT. Freestanding units generally cost less to install than built-in inserts, which may need brickwork. Flue kits, installation, and any finishing work are quoted separately based on your home.
